The committee made significant strides with the City to come to an agreement on our new contract. Both sides made several tentative agreements (TA) on outstanding proposals many of which we had been arguing for months. We know the members have questions regarding our progress on the General Wage Increase (GWI) and the Winter Closure Policy. Last week, the city amended their original Winter Closure Policy proposal after movement had stalled over the last month. The City resubmitted the new policy as a Letter of Agreement (LOA) and instead offered a start date in Winter 2027 with a meet and confer to assess its impact in January 2027. A counter to the LOA was submitted requiring the City to meet and confer annually rather than just the first year it would be implemented. This would give the union more opportunities to bargain. The counter was accepted by the City but we have not agreed to the policy yet.
As we’ve previously made clear, our acceptance of the policy is tied to the GWI and while the City has made positive movements on their GWI offer it’s not enough. After a 12 hour day, we still did not walk away from the table with a satisfactory GWI. It’s imperative that the committee get you the best offer that we can in this unforgiving financial climate, especially as the City has now informed the committee that no retroactive pay will be considered this contract cycle. We will meet again next Wednesday, October 14 and hope to bring to you, our members, our final tentatively agreed upon MOU for 2026-2029 very soon!
The committee is continuing to fight for what you deserve, but we need your voices. We are urging all our brothers and sisters, tell the City you demand more! The committee has started a letter writing campaign to the Mayor, City Manager and City Council. Submit a letter to voice your demands for a fair contract!
